Pahalgam is known as the Land of the Shepherds. This was the real occupation of the inhabitants of village Pahalgam. The place is 85 km away from the main city Srinagar. Pahalgam is situated at an altitude of 2,133 metres amidst lofty deodars, fir, pine and junipers.
Pahalgam is the Base Camp for the pilgrims of Amarnath Yatra. The Pahalgam -Chandanwari -Amarnath route is preferred by tourists trying to reach the holy cave of Shiva. Apart from being a base of the pilgrim’s site, Pahalgam is also a treat for adventure junkies and is the starting point for several treks. However, the highlight of the activities available for tourists is the White water rafting facility winding down the Lidder Stream through the beautiful forests and down the rapids.
Some major tourist attractions of Pahalgam are: Mammal Temple, Baisaran, Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering, Pahalgam Golf Course (2400m above sea level)
